Aperture and K50

Have recently acquired a K50 and wanted to start playing with Raw photos. Have also just bought new iMac and so included Aperture in the bundle as quite cheap and probably a good starting point for me to learn about PP. Took some Raw+ pictures but can only find Jpeg in Aperture project. Thought camera might be an issue until I realised that Aperure has only recently issued update for K3 and doesn't yet recognise the K50 re importing raw. I sort of assumed (always dangerous) that the export of Raw data from cameras (especially from one brand) would be in the same format. Clearly I will have to wait. It is fine with Jpeg

DNG should be as it's mean't to be an open standard.
And as the K-30 is listed the K-50 ought to be supported as it's basically the same camera.

There are two ways for a catalogue programme to display image thumbnails for organising purposes - either disply the embedded JPEG in the RAW file (which you DNGs have as produced by the camera processor) or carry out 'on the fly' conversion of your imported files and generate a thumbnail from that. This behaviour would be controlled in the settings, so I think its a case of delving into the Aperture preferences or control panel and setting it up. I'd seek help if needed from an Aperture related forum.

Thanks for the replies. Will look into Aperture settings but not optimistic. While waiting for Apple to release an update I thought I might load and try the Pentax software though I have grim memories of a fleeting attempt to use this many years ago. The new super fast, super slim iMac however doesn't have a slot for discs (which I did know and was confident I would never need...). One of those days.

A quick look at the Apple Aperture Support page lists DNG as a supported file with the following note : 'DNG files must be generated by the Adobe DNG Converter with the “Convert to Linear Image” option turned off.'

I'd install a copy of the Adobe DNG Converter onto the computer and check for that option. It may all work seamlessly from there on. Here's a link to the page I checked ... link

The K50 is not listed for PEF support, but that's no issue at all really. I don't shoot PEF, DNG is better for both compatibility and future-proofing reasons I think.

Let us know how you get on with the DNG converter.

K-50 doesn't save RAW as .PEF Only .DNG

Good on Apple for not supporting DNG without caveats. But all the same, if it supports the K-30 DNG I'd be very surprised that it doesn't support the K-50 DNG.

Brilliant. Thanks McGreg! Simple download of DNG which iPhoto/Aperture seem to pick up automatically as when I plugged the K50 in downloaded all the photo's without any prompt - not just the JPEG as previously

Last night (dusk to darkness) I took photo's from Waterloo bridge, being one of my favourite views along the river - my first attempt. Now I can try and work out how to darken the illuminated clock face of Big Ben which is overexposed which I knew would happen and why I wanted to shoot raw and then try PP

I also think I need to change my thirty year old Velbon tripod. Any advice (say up to @£100 including head) for something light and sturdy - I know it is a compromise.

Once again great advice - thanks to everyone, an invaluable forum.
