Looks like a 3rd party pice of kit made to fit the Pentax metal 35mm bodies?

It looks to me like it's for mounting a camera that doesn't have a tripod bush although I don't recall ever seeing a Pentax without one.

I wonder if the tripod bush in the clamp is the larger size rather than the smaller size (??? 3/8 v., 1/4)? I used to have to have a little insert to fit my Manfrotto tripod head to my Unilock tripod.

Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.

I'm not sure I'd want to fit my camera in there without some form of protection

This is quite an old item, and as Ken identified it is for mounting a camera on a tripod where the camera has no tripod bush of its own. It's more suitable for 1960s rangefinders and cameras of that size. The adjustment plate on the left allows the camera to be snugly fitted in and there are felt pads to prevent scratching.

There is a tripod bush in the bottom and one in the side, so the camera can be held horizontally or vertically.

It's bulky, looks home-made but isn't, and I had one of these once in a job lot of items. It sold for £5.00 on eBay.

R G Lewis were a respectable dealer who supplied a resolution test negative with every lens they sold.

The main purpose of this would have been to hold the Pentax camera (probably Spotmatic) vertical on a pan and tilt head. Early pan and tilt heads didn't have the facility/hinge to allow vertical use.

They were very common with Leicas.
