This is going to be an extreme long shot, are there any users in Essex / Suffolk with a Sigma 100-300 f4 and 1.4x teleconverter who'd be willing to help out a member in distress?! I've just taken delivery of a Sigma 100-300 and 1.4x teleconverter, the AF works fine when the lens is mounted directly on the body but with the tele in between the AF doesn't function, it sounds like the screw isn't locating but I don't want to have to send both the lens and tele back, it's most likely the tele but I'd like to be able to confirm first. It's a big ask I know

I can't help you directly, but it's really got to be the teleconverter if the screw isn't engaging with the TC but does when mounted directly.
you don't have to be mad to post here

but it does help

Hey Simon, just realised who you are!

I don't have either lens, but I do have a Tamron 1.4x AF converter which could be of use deciding where the problem lies. Not sure where/how we'd meet up though. This weekend's out, the following weekend I will be at Fingringhoe for a workshop, so if you could hang on 'til then that might be of help.

Let me know if that's any use.

Have you tried the teleconverter with another lens?

CHECK NONE OF THE LENS ELEMENTS WILL TOUCH TOGETHER FIRST, you have to be carefull using matched converters with lenses theyre not designed for.
My Names Alan, and I'm a lensaholic.

Hi Dan, thanks for that it would be a great help, unfortunately I'm going to be in Belfast that weekend at a wedding!! I've had a bit more of a play around with it, I mounted the tele on the lens and turned the focusing screw but it had no effect on the lens, also it doesn't appear that the screw protrudes from the tele far enough to engage into the lens so it looks almost definitely like the tele. Unfortunately I bought it from America so I'll have to package it up and post it home.

Great reviews from you last Fingringhoe course by the way!

That's good to know. I heard that you'd got a 300mm lens, for a good price, but was told it was the DA*. I'd have been very interested to know where you'd got it at the price I was told!

If you fancied coming down this end of the county, I'm at Thorndon with a workshop on saturday, and bedfords park on the sunday.

That would be great, I'll probably be able to come down on Saturday, you can have a look over the new lens!

Okay, no problem. I'll be occupied from 10.00am-4.00pm, but you could nab me either for a while at lunchtime (12ish-1ish), or after 4.00, which might be better, but whatever suits you.

See you saturday!

Thanks for the advice on Saturday Dan, I spoke to Sigma this morning and they've said to mail it to them here with the receipts and they'll repair it under warranty. Much easier than sending it back to New York!

Excellent news Simon, glad I could be of help.

So, just to recap for the benefit of others, Simon bought a Sigma lens from the U.S., properly imported with taxes paid etc, and Sigma U.K. are happy to repair under warranty. I assume this isn't a one-off, and I'm sure I read it somewhere on here that this was the case, so I was only regurgitating someone else's advice.

Hi,
I purchased exactly the same kit and had the same problem.
The problem appears to be that this combination does not work in low light on a K10D. I found that if you manually focused to near the focusing point it would work fine, or if conditions were not dull everything would be fine.
Otherwise the focusing motor whirred and nothing happened.

I have found that the lens is excellent quality and very sharp, even with the teleconverter on. I would suggest switching the shake reduction off if you use it on a tripod.

Just had my TC repaired at Sigma, it was a faulty TC.
