Hello All.
My name is Tony and I have just purchased a Pentax X5. I was inspired recently when seeing a friend's Sony DSLR but put off by the cost and reports of dust ingress so as I had had a good experience with an old Pentax Optio SVi many years ago did some research. This took me to the internet where I saw the reasonably priced camera and when I showed my daughter the spec (far better qualified than I) she was impressed with both that and the relative cost. But determined to have it in my hand to assess what it can do and the build quality I found an outlet and so glad I did. There I got a demonstration and was immediately sold on it. - excuse the pun. Equally important I was shown the silver model which had I not seen would automatically have gone for the black body and later forever regretted it. I paid a little more than the online price but consider that well worth the peace of mind. The setting up on two computers was simple and slowly but surely finding my way round it; the more I learn the more I like it. I am now looking for a case and, again, it looks like it will be necessary to take the camera with me to make the right decision. Next I must find out how to add an Avatar to my profile. Tony

Welcome Tony, and to you too Steve.
This is a really good Forum, friendly and supportive, so if you want to just be part of the gang, you've joined the best, but if you also want to hone those photographic skills, again you're at the right place!
Won't be long I suspect before you're 'weaned' off of your X5's and onto something else, like a K5II. Start saving now!

Suspect I won't, Lottery win excepted, be weaned off the X5, John. Limited disposable income puts paid to that idea! Plus I would much prefer a mirrorless type, like the Lumix G3 or 5, rather than a big SLR. Shame Ricoh/Pentax don't do one.
With respect to dust ingress, Drummerboy, I've always wondered why they don't install a small shutter that covers the sensor when there is no lens or cap in place or when the camera is turned off. Sure, it would push the price up, but would cut down on time wasted doing repairs.
Anyway, off to play with my, finally arrived, X5. I've checked all the relevant bits seem to work, next phase is to play with all the 'creative' filters and get them out of my system.
Suspect I won't, Lottery win excepted, be weaned off the X5, John. Limited disposable income puts paid to that idea! Plus I would much prefer a mirrorless type, like the Lumix G3 or 5, rather than a big SLR. Shame Ricoh/Pentax don't do one.

Thanks for that. Don't start saying I will soon want something better, please. That's just what I read when researching. I had looked for a DDSL,as explained, and was well warned that while a Bridge camera was well and good if I wasn't careful it could lead that way. I guess it could happens as one never knows but wait and see. I see your location is South London. I was born in London and was there during the Blitz and every time at night when I hear a heavy plane go over it takes me right back then.
PS Might as well look and see what a K511 will cost just in case!

Au contraire! In changeable lens country there's the K-mount K-01, (now only available second hand in the UK), the Q's, all well respected and highly regarded, and in fixed lens the MX-1 and Ricoh GR.(I'm not ignoring the various compacts from both brands- well I am I suppose:roll

The 'classic' K-5 is available at silly prices right now, both second-hand and new. Nothing wrong with it at all. The K5II and IIs have various refinements and improvements over the classic.

Previous Pentax was an Optio X33LF. Took nice pictures (including my avatar), but a tad out of date.
Also have a load of old M series SLRs in the wardrobe, but most are suffering from foam-rot, so they don't get used.
