I'm in the process of trying to put together a budget strobist kit so have been looking into it a little. You can use any brand flash but make sure they have a low trigger voltage or you may end up frying your triggers.
However one thing to look out for is that Minolta/Sony dedicated flashes have a different hot shoe.

For what it's worth I've been using a Sunpak Autozoom 5000 which has a trigger voltage over 200v with the same small cheap flash slave for over 25 years.
Will this do any damage to the slave, it cost £5

I'm using wireless triggers with manual studio flashes without any problems. RR have you had personal experience of the problem you describe?

It seems the newer cheapo triggers are rated to only 12v trigger voltage. There are several flavours of these "cactus" triggers so just warning the OP to be careful.
Shim, you're right, they are mega cheap to replace so it's no biggie if they do get toasted really but it may mean a whole new set (transmitter & recievers) if you can't identify & replace the toasted one with one the Exact same spec.
I've got an old high voltage flash here but intend to use that with a dumb optical trigger if it's needed.
