Given your budget and considerations I would buy the K-5 with the kit lens + 55-300.

The rationale is that the kit lens is a good performed (not excellent) and is a great value, you can always upgrade it later without a significant loss. The 55-300 is a fantastic lens for the price, one you can keep for the long term, great quality and value. And you can find it used on this forum from time to time and price new is very reasonable too.
+1

I've seen some excellent shots at airshows from the 55-300 and it suffers very little from purple fringing in high contrast areas that other 'budget' (and no so budget) lenses tend to.

K-5 and lens kit

Pentax K-5 Digital SLR Camera with DA 18-55 WR - DA 50-200 WR Lens Kit

Not a bad deal and makes the budget.

But I'm starting to lean towards the 55-300. Pity they didn't include that over the 50-200.

It`ll be great to see a Pentax camera in Jersey - I visit my sister in 5 Oaks every year when possible, and I`ve yet to bump into another "real photographer" !!

Good luck with the K5 - I`m still saving up...........

Cheers Tony

I'm not that far from 5 Oaks to be honest.

Your right, most people I know here who like photography enjoy their Canons and Nikon's.

Very rarely will you see a Pentax. Only seen a couple myself around the airshow and battle of flowers etc

Looking forward to getting some great shots of Jersey though of which I'll be sure to post at PU.

Going at beginning August this year for 10 days - sis lives at Fernside Farm - weather hopefully good and much to photograph as usual.

Hey you never know.

Red Tower is probably one of the only places I still haven't visited yet.

Hoping summer is good this year.

All the best
