Hello all
Could someone help me to work out how many "clicks" a camera has made.
When is a camera seen as having "a high mileage" -bit like a car really.

When buying S/H cameras from shops, is it usual to ask how many clicks the camera has??
Would appreciate insight
Regards
Chris

You can check it from the EXIF information.
There is to my knowledge no way to tell this from a camera menu.

In the EXIF data there is a item called shutter count.
It counts all shutter actuations even those not resulting in a picture like opening for liveview, digital preview and white balance capture.
My image counter is at 2734 but the shutter counter is at 2989.

The MTBF for the shutter is around 100.000 actuations.

embedding svg images doesn't seem to work, by clicking on this LINK you get to a picture of a MTBF graph if you are not familiar with the concept of MTBF

Download Photome and open one of your latest pics with it. You will see loads of Exif info, one piece of info will give you your cameras shutter count.

Hi, Thats just the tested to at Pentax, what they expect it to do before it gives trouble.

MTBF = meantime between failures or how long on average you can expect it to last.

He'll be talking about "tap end of the bath" failures next.

Oh, thanks for info.

So, would a retailer have that info?
Would you buy a cam with high clicks? say 50,000.

A retailer will probably not have that info. The best thing to do is take a shot and look at the exif data on a computer. If you happen to have a laptop you can take it with you.
If it is an internet store you could ask him to take a image with the camera and send it to you unmodified so you can look at the exif data.

Or if it is a retailer who knows what he is selling he would be willing to look the info up in the exif data of a picture and send it to you.

Keen buyers will ask that, yes. Pentax cameras are designed to last for 100,000 shutter activations, and can actually last for more.

I would be more concerened about how the camera has been treated in general than the number of clicks.
