Am I missing out ?

I have just moved from a DS to a K10D. I do my pp in Photoshop Elements 4.0.

With my DS I shot raw in PEF and used Adobe Camera Raw 3.7 processed in PSE 4.0

With the K10D, as I have not upgraded PSE to 5.0, I cannot use a later version of ACR so cannot shoot the PEF format, as ACR 3.7 does not support the K10D .PEF

Of course I can shoot in DNG directly and this is what I have been doing. My question is therefore ..am I missing out on something because I am using a version of ACR which does not recognise my camera ?

When I first used ACR with my DS , when I opened a PEF file there were settings labeled "default camera settings". When I use A DNG file from my K10D these "default camera settings" are the same as they were with the DS....is this because the ACR does not recognise the K10D.

So should I upgrade to PSE 5.0 and install the latest ACR 4.1 ??

Any help appreciated.

ACR 3.7 DOES support K10D PEF's.

I have no problem using Camera Raw 3.7 with my K10D .PEF or DNG files.

All that may be missing is CR 3.7 may not recognise the newer coding for the lenses which I think was changed with the latter K10D firmware (1.20?).

e.g. Although looking at a PEF file with PhotoME correctly sees the lens as a
smc PENTAX-D FA 100mm F2.8 MACRO

The same file processed in CR 3.7 only shows the lens as a 100mm lens.

How bizzare !!! When I first shot raw PEF with the K10D I am sure I could not process the files. I have just tried after reading your comments, and I can ?

Either I cocked up when I first got the camera, or it was something to do with the firmware update.

Either way, thank you for your help.

I’m fairly sure I tried a PEF file when I first got my K10D while it still had 1.00 firmware, but it could be I only tried it with a DNG file before loading the 1.20 firmware.

I doubt that the firmware would have changed the file format, I think it is more likely to have been an ACR thing. Possibly the "old" ACR version was cached and the new one wasn't used until the PC was rebooted?
