AF080C Ring Flash

Hi Everyone!

I'm well aware of this unit's wonderful capability - nay - necessity - for good close-up and macro work.

Now the dumb part:

Has anyone tried using it as a regular flash (range?) and with portraits?

I've often wondered where those circular light reflections in a model's eyes come from in some shots.

I have both the AF200SA and AF280T units, but was wondering how the ring flash would compare in the 4 - 5 foot range?

The range is very short, so it's best with models who are under 2 foot high.

But, please, no doggy pics.

I use mine for portraits all the time.

3 tips:

1) Red eye may be a problem( use with bright ambient light, digital red eye removal helps, avoid having model look straight at lens.

2) use ringflash to trip other slaved flashunits (great catchlights)

3) use fast lenses (extend the flash reach.

You've hit all the points I thought of.

I plan to use it in conjunction with either floods or slave units, but was worried about red eye (film). I'll experiment with how directly the model can look into the lens. Maybe the floods will close the irises somewhat.
