easy way: select the pink areas and desaturate them.
hard way: Grab your cloning tool and get busy.

Thanks guys, I'll see how I get on this evening. There's no real way I could have avoided this problem is there. If I want to shoot from that angle I will inevitably appear in the shot - right?

I suppose not. tripod and self timer would help.....push shutter, walk away.
maybe a ninja forum, or hunting forum could give you some tips on invisability/camoflage.
Chris Angel might have some "Freak"y advice....
But also, really, standing further back with a telephoto, or building a light tent, or shooting through/behind some other vehicle/backdrop/object, could work...

Nice suggestions none of which would have worked on the day apart from the tripod and release but even then I think you'd simply have seen less 'stuff' in teh chrome. I'll try that next time though as I usually chuck the tripod in the car.
I had to do a lot of wriggling to avoid including my feet in many shots at 10mm and it was quite plain hardly anyone realised how wide a 10mm lens is as they thought I was after serious close ups.
