advice on fee for christmas card image

Hello peeps,

I've been approached by a cancer charity for the use of one of my images on their christmas cards. They are asking how much I would charge. I have no idea how much this should be.

Depends how charitable you're feeling

I've got no idea really, what I do know is charities don't have much spare cash.

It's a charity.
I'd say give it, with condition that your company logo be printed on it.
Ask to work out a deal to get paid to cover all thier functions and events and fundraisers for your normal rates.
Show them the benifits of having you do the work so they can control thier image, choose thier press releases, and produce better reports, and documenting thier activities to show various gov't agencies and supporters.

I know what you mean, maybe getting an image of mine used in this manner would be good for my CV.

however, this is a large charity, and my experience of working with/for large charities is that they have a lot of money for the management side.


I don't think my logo on a their christmas card would sit well. As it's a nationwide (UK) charity it may be too much for me to do all their.

On top of that, I don't have the skills or the equipment to take on a job of that scale. But it is an interesting idea.

Not sure how the tax laws work over there, but what some at our camera club have done is this : Charge for the image, donate the money back to the charity. Get a tax receipt.

Everybody wins - they get the image for free, and you not only get some tax relief, but also the "feel good" aspect of making a donation as well...

Check out how much any of the picture libraries charge to license an image for a card, quote that and then offer a 'charity discount'. Big charities are big business. I did some work (about a day)for a small charity and was happy with £100.

Don, we dont have such enlightened tax laws here.

Thanks for the info peeps, but tax related 'stuff' won't help me, I'm not a business that can benefit from it, (I'm not a business at all!).

I think I've agreed on a fee, depending on the licensing the charity want/need.

They have previously paid £100 per image for christmas cards.

We have Gift Aid over here, and it is a major benefit to charities. So here, the real benefits of the option Classvino mentioned are:

a) You can Gift Aid your donation back to the charity, and they then get the income tax you've paid on that amount, at the basic rate (22%). So you donate £10, they actually get £12.82.

b) If you're a Higher Rate tax payer, you get your lower rate tax limit raised by the amount you donate. So you pay the government less higher rate tax.


Bottom line is, if you donate to charity, make sure you Gift Aid it!

P.S. I'm not saying to Justgetoutandride that he should do that, that's entirely up to him (I often charge a charity for my services), but if people are considering donating anything, Gift Aid it!!

That's what I meant... More of a personal than a business thing...

BTW, what a great system ! In Canada it's similar, but the charity doesn't get the extra taxes, just the donation. The donor can lower their total taxable income by using donation receipts from registered charities (up to a certain amount).

And, like Dan, I'm not saying anyone should donate, just that if you were considering donating, you might as well use any programs in place...

Sounds like alot of good advice!
getting a logo or photocredit or copyright notice, (often on the back in small print) is not uncommon, especially if you intend to retain copyright.

I've stated I will retain copyright, just waiting to hear about how long they want to use/licence the image. Probably have to wait until tomorrow.
