Advice on compact Pentax

I’m going on holiday to India in March next year – normally I would take my K20 and associated kit with me – but as we’re staying put in Goa for two weeks and not travelling around the country – I think the time has come to invest in a compact – Pentax of course. I have little or no experience here – a friend has a C**** G10 and I have to admit his results are pretty good. So, is there a comparable Pentax product? (I really don’t know about these things!). I would probably look for something second hand, but any advice on a compact Pentax would be much appreciated.

IMO the only comparable camera from Pentax is the Q but I have a feeling that will probably change once Ricoh get started.

Personally I went for a LX5 as I wanted a camera that shoots raw but didnt want an interchangeable lens body. Looked at the Canon GX range but they were just too big (you are allowed to say Canon here :wink. Canon S95 was nice and so was the Olympus XZ-1 but the Panasonic won me over in the end.

I have to agree. If you keep the G10 at a low ISO there is little from Pentax to really compare.

The X70 & X90 are good cameras, but have you considered the WG-1?

If you are out in a boat or doing a bit of shallow diving then you have the underwater option and at the end of the day there are far more important aspects to memorable photographs than image quality.

I have an optio WG1 and recently took it to New York and Grand Bahama on my holiday. I found it a bit of a revelation to be honest. I originally got it because I wanted to be be able to take pictures underwater, but I ended up using it a lot in a whole range of situations and I was really pleased with the results I got, especially with a bit of PP. There are a ton of shots taken with it on my flickr if you want to see some examples. Best bet though, I suspect, is to find a camera shop and try a few cameras out. Worth searching on camera model on flickr as well to see sample pics.

The main limitations I found with the WG1 were that the optical zoom (up to 5x) was fine, although I wasn't very pleased with the digital zoom beyond that and so didn't use it; and I always kept the ISO down as low as I could as the higher ISOs seem a bit noisy. Apart from that it is fantastically pocket-able, has a number of adjustments which can be made and loads of shooting modes, and is genuinely pretty indestructible as far as I could make out, all in all I was chuffed!
