my problem at the moment (computer arrived today) is to find the correct cable for connecting to the screen. The old VGA cable will work but wont give me screen resolution above 1920x1080. The video card specs say I need a "display port" cable to get the full 2560x 1400 res of my screen.

VGA cable is an old analogue method of connecting a computer to a monitor.
Check your monitor for input options, and if it has a display port or hdmi/dvi input then you should use that.

Thanks for all the advice. I found the displayport cable and I am back in business. Today have been busy installing stuff.

Well everything seemed to be going swimingly until I tried to use Lightroom or Silkypix when i was getting blue-screen issues. As this was the reason for moving to a new computer and OS I was not best pleased.

Top marks to the computer manufacturers though. A call to the tech support line and they wanted to have the machine back. They would have picked it up from me but I decided to drive it down to them as they are on the south coast about an hour away. This was last Monday. Tuesday lunchtime I get a call confirming one of the RAM modules was faulty. They replaced them both and on Wednesday lunchtime it was delivered back to me.

Now all up and running, I need to get out and take some pictures to process.

You should always run MemTest86 V7.5 Free Edition on any new memory before using. Also run it whenever you have a problem with the PC.

I tried dropping my raw files into a temp folder on my laptop's internal ssd the other day. Lightroom imported them much faster and it was quicker at generating 1:1 views. From now on I'm going to create monthly folders for initial edits then transfer to external hd for long term storage. Obviously I'm backing up my files externally.
