Hey Gwyn
As nobody have taken up your challenge yet, here is my go:
An adblocker lets You "kill" banners, pictures, scripts, pop ups etc. As your question imply itīs not working miracles but needs some work from the user.
You can usually kill everything in one go, but that is rarely the way to go. The one I'm using (for Firefox) works by right-klicking on the target (say the google ads to the right) + choose "adblock xxx" (script/image etc.)
Don't know about Explorer or other browsers. If you haven't dumped Explorer yet, it's about time ...
I rarely use the adblock functionality, mainly when forums go to far in integrating blinking graphics and huge adbanners.

Thankyou Joe. I use Firefox too, and saw everyone talking about this add on here and was interested. Ads don't bother me that much on sites, just occasionally they annoy me. I shall give it a go today and try to train it to my way of thinking!

Yeah I use adblock plus, and after I got it I found a script which added a load of ads to the blocking system (saves me keying in stuff)
You can block most frames and pictures
Like for example, the free newsletter frame that is on the right hand side, I have blocked because theres no need for that to be there for me
as well as all the ads
