Sockpuppet,
I've not used the Vivitar, so can't tell you how they compare, but I do own the Tamron 70-210mm f/3.5 which I rate pretty highly. It gives excellent results on film, and I've been impressed with how it copes on digital. It does tend to struggle with heavily backlit scenes, producing purple fringing which can be tricky to get rid of, but overall it performs well. I've used it almost exclusively wide open for low light photos, some of which I'll try to post tomorrow. It's pretty heavy, but that's to be expected from a constant aperture lens with that kind of zoom range, and though it's 2/3rds of a stop slower it's a lot cheaper than buying a 70-200mm f/2.8 (as long as you're happy to focus manually).
It'll also focus down to 1:3, if I remember rightly.

Mike,
Sorry I wasn't able to post these earlier - they're all taken wide open. Looking through the pictures I've taken with the Tamron 70-210mm f/3.5 I realise that I've barely used it outside at low ISOs, but hopefully these shots will give you an idea of how it performs.

Thanks Mike! I'd also be interested to see how it does with the 2x TC, which takes it to 1:1, I think...?

From what I have read it takes it to around 1:1.5, the older 52a version goes to 1:1 with the teleconverter but the IQ is nowhere near as good and it doesn't have the constant aperture.

Now that the Tamron PKA mount is fixed and working I have got the lens on the camera and having a play. Nothing special but these 2 were taken not long ago, both have the 2X 01f Tamron teleconverter attached and at maximum magnification.
First one is at 70mm (140mm) and second is at 200mm (400mm).
Im certainly not used to standing that far away when I do a macro shot but the results are not bad imo .. both uncropped.

And just a quick shot of the dog at 210mm with no teleconverter

I think I will enjoy using this lens

Thanks for posting those, Mike. I'm impressed with its performance with the teleconverter - I might have to try to get hold of one.
Love the shot of your dog!

Yes the teleconverter seems pretty good when doing close up stuff but I must admit it is total pants when used for long shots, the photo seems to come out very hazy, almost cloudy tbh.
Took some photos with just the lens on its own today.

Very impressed with it.
