It's a fair point about the distraction from the text, although as its a photography book then the image can always be powerful and eye catching. Your one and last years choice do have the advantage of very supportive backgrounds in this context, so look like good choices.
I suppose ideally a shot could be taken with the specific cover layout in mind, but otherwise a little but of cropping and sizing will do the job. In any case it looks like a beautiful book.

Kris, yes still using Blurb. The quality is a step up from the local printers, although the price may be a little higher it's worth the extra. We usually do ImageWrap hardcovers.

This time around I've used my own image on the cover of the ADAPS Year Book. Although there were plenty of great shots to choose from, they were pretty much all too busy to be able to read any text properly.
The nearest one was member Andy Butler's image, but I felt the background was too bright and overwhelmed the subject.

It's an enjoyable task putting the yearbook together but I'm always glad when physical copies start to arrive and it looks as good in print as on the screen.
