I know the Miyajima Torii well - I spent a few days on the island and as I looked out of the guest house window - it was there.

Jamie - glad you enjoyed!!
Did you get the "cold tingling" down your spine at the Genbaku Dome too? I'm sure you'll have also taken the short walk to the epicentre of the blast too - at the bridges... Quite a sobering experience!
I'm 100% certain that these aren't your "best" shots taken in Japan, so get the goodies loaded, mon!!

Steve,
I was there to give support and companionship to my daughter more than to take photographs. I didn't want her to have a 'lost in translation' moment while she was there as this was a very important interview for her future career. Realistically travelling that far and back you really need to give yourself a week to settle in and return so we visited Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Miyajima whilst on the ground in Japan. The JR Rail Pass is a wonderful way to do so. She didn't know anyone in Kyoto and her friends from 3 years back in Tokyo had mostly moved on. Luckily I work for an airline so I could accompany her - albeit on standby. Kyoto was 37-40 Celcius and at one point 94% humidity with overcast skies so not the ideal weather for photography - well that's my excuse anyway.

I have only been past Hiroshima, however I have stayed for several days in Nagasaki and back in about '94 was targeted by local teenagers who wanted to try their English. There were very few tourists there in those days.
As you say you were there to support your daughters - but did you have time to spare in Kyoto?
I can remember Chawan-zaka (Teapot Lane) which is on way up to the Kiyomizu-dera temple and still have a Tea Set from there in my office display case.
