A very weird insect indeed...

Excellent spot and well done getting the shots. The bug-in-flight shot is the highlight (you presumably knew that already), but all three together make a fine set.

"I flattened a battery trying to capture it in flight." - Was that when you threw it at the bug in exasperation???

Steve
Super shooting.

I know what i like, If not always why.

Steve: My aim must have been better than I thought - the wasp is back on the Fennel this evening minus its ovipositor

I have never seen one before - the book says it is a Gasteruption Jaculator (I kid you not) and is a parasitic wasp. It is surprising fast and agile, I flattened a battery trying to capture it in flight.
Taken with K5 and Pentax 100mm macro, handheld, range 2 - 3 feet.
Feel free !
