A very silly simple question

I know that this may seem very simple and that the answer is probably obvious but here goes..

What is the relationship between the number of the photos shown on the DS screen and the number assigned to the photo when it is downloaded? I cannot seem to make a link. The more senior I get the more I find the neeed to note the picture and its number as I take the shot!

Second question:

What is the numbering system used by the camera for each photo?

I think the default on the ist dslrs is that the picture is given a filename based on how many pictures the camera has taken (up to a certain number, which I think is 10,000 after which the filenames become a little unwieldy). eg on my dl2 'IMGP5502' was the 5502nd frame I took. After 10,000 it'll go back to IMGP0001.

Do you mean the number shown on the camera lcd is different to the number on your computer screen : how strange... what program do you use to view the images on the computer? In the camera menu try resetting the file number ( as long as you don't think this'll confuse you pc filing system)

I'm not sure if you're asking about the number of images remaining on a card, which is shown on the LCD screen. Inother words, it is telling you how many shots you have left on that particular SD card.

Each image is given a file number and you can choose whether this resets to the start every time you change the card, or whether it just keeps on counting, thus giving you the total number of shots the camera has recorded. I choose the latter as it ensures that no two images end up with the same number.

We have two systems in play. The fog slowly lifts...

1. One - the lCD is telling me how many images are left on the card.

2. two - A consecutive individual number given by the camear to each photograph.

If I review the photograph on the back back screen of the camera it shows it is a jpeg on the top left corner and on the top right it shows 100-1477. What is the 100 telling me? Is the 1477 the image number? If it is I have found out what I want. I can then write up my notes on the image in the field and relate that to the image when I have saved it onto the computer.

The image number is indeed 1477. The 100 refers to the folder that contains the images. If you transfer the folder to your computer you will see it as 100 Pentax. So the image is 1477 in folder 100.
