A new addition to our family

I don't usually do 'cute' but who can resist this guy?




This is Glen, an eight week old Labrador/Retriever X Guide Dog puppy that we'll have for the next eleven months or so. He arrived this morning with so much stuff our kitchen resembles a small pet shop.

He's gorgeous!

Kudos to you and your family for being puppy-walkers. Such a vital job.

I bet it will be hard to let him go when the time comes though. But when he goes you'll have room for the next pup .

oh my - he's going to keep you all busy , but just think of the satisfaction you will have when you see him growing in confidence as he matures .

Yes it is "cute", I hate that term, but is also a very good image.

I'm jealous. I'd love a dog, but Mrs Oggy and I are out of the house most of the day and it would be unfair.

Ohw, I love puppies and I love labs (we have a 12-year-old lady xlab and I love her to bits).

Over here they're always looking for people to train guide dogs. It's not an easy job and the most difficult moment must be when you have to part. We used to have foster dogs - one of them stayed with us for about 7 months and it was really hard to let her go after such a long time. But her new owners are very fond of her and still send us pictures from time to time. She looks happy and everyone is fond of her. That's when you know you've done the right thing and - as Gwyn said - you're ready for the next one.

There's a shortage of people willing to do it here, there are only two of us in the whole of the South side of Glasgow. A big part of the interview is about your emotional reaction when he leaves, its all a bit awsome to think that it costs £28000 to breed and train a guide dog.

He will be coming to work with me. I'm looking forward to clients' reactions to 'Do you mind if I bring my guide dog on the shoot?'

As someone with an American wife I refuse to comment.

I did have someone on Palace Green in Durham once ask me "what's that?" "The castle" I replied. Looking puzzled they then said "Well if that's the castle what's that?" as they pointed at the cathedral...

Lovely looking puppy - we have a black lab/golden retriever cross who does some work as a therapy dog (he goes and licks old ladies and eats their biscuits in a nearby home once a week, and has also done some work in South London and Maudsley Hospital). They're great dogs, and it's great that you're doing this work to help prepare yours for such an important role. Have a lot of fun!

Well actually -

There was a case a few years ago when the police stopped a car which was being driven erratically only to find it was being driven by a blind man. The passenger explained that he had just been banned so he had got his blind friend to drive.

When the case got to court the Judge banned the blind man for a few months-----


then insisted that he retake his driving test.
