I couldn't get the detail I get without it.
I have yet to get eye detail without a flash. I'm not sure it's possible. Specular highlights ruin it.

Funnily enough, one very similar (about 1cm in length) landed on my leg while walking earlier today. The proboscis is hard to see with the naked eye!I didn't have my camera with me.
