A missed photo opportunity

As I missed the opportunity, I have no photo's to show for it, but . . .

. . . we are well used to seeing sparrows, starlings, crows, jackdaws, and a variety of seabirds here in southern spain. We even get to see flamingoes, rollers, bee eaters, and the occasional hoopoe. Today, my wife and I were sitting on our terrace having lunch, and yes, I'd had a glass or three of wine, but out of nowhere came this extraordinarily large bird which settled in our lemon tree. Well, large compared to most of the others I mentioned.

At first glance it looked a bit like a bird of prey . . . but when it turned towards me I could see it had no hooked beak (or bill if you prefer). I immediatley commented to wifey that it looked a bit like a cuckoo, but it can't be, can it?

It stayed for about 10 seconds and flew off and of course the camera was snuggled up inside it's bag in the house.

Having checked and re-checked my bird guide, I discovered it was a great spotted cuckoo.

I'll try and have the camera ready for if/when it comes back.
