Panic over!! The problem seems to be connected to the aperture ring, if the lens is mounted with the ring set to A then the lens jams in the mount. Considerable force was needed to move the aperture ring off of the A setting in place but, once done, the lens moved quite freely.
Strange that - the lens is clearly marked as compatible with P/K-A & R-P/K.
And there are NO Ricoh type pins on this lens!

Does the lens have a Ricoh pin? It's a small pin that protrudes where the AF connects on modern lenses.

Some "A" positions don't have an internal switch, rather one of the lens contacts pops in and out. Sounds like this might be sticking?

this reminds me of my very first post on this forum. A 500mm Tamron stuck on a brand new *istDS. Brute force did the trick!

This time it clicked into place about 10 degrees short of the vertical which means that the electrical contacts are not aligned. Worse still the lens will not now dismount and will only move very slightly in either direction.
I have a horrible suspicion that it is not now possible to remove the lens and I may well have to bin both
Shame really - the lens is in superb condition and the K10 shutter count less than 6k.
I am wondering if it is possible to partly dismantle the lens in place and if anyone else has had this happen to them
