very nice 2nd shot. for the first one I'd crop out the railings. Is it a verry high ISO or just some odd clouds?

You would seriously crop out the railings? I think they make the shot. I did push the photo a bit in PP - originally it was ISO 200, so it's quite likely a bit more noise came in via PP.

Great photos that show what can be done with the kit lens, leave the railings as they add depth to the picture

For night shots I honestly wouldn't have any other lens than the humble kit lens. The Tamron 17-50 for example produces a significant amount of lens flares during long exposures. The 18-55 controls the light very well.
I've shown this pic to the forum a short while back, but for those that didn't spot it, it again shows the capability of the kit lens for night shots:
