Number one does nothing for me, I'm afraid.
But number two!! I like that very much.
I like the contrast/ mono conversion. The composition is, IMHO, very nice, with enough going to to make me look further.
Yep, I like number two a lot.
Getting there! Thanks to you guys

I agree with Father Ted, number two is a great shot and conversion.

I like the composition in number two a lot, and the mono conversion is very good. However I can't help but notice quite strong halos around the lampost and trees which spoil it a bit for me.

The first shot is a bit of a "snapshot" but the second is quite nice, the composition is good and everything seems to come together well. I do have issues with it though, for me the sky is way too light, and I'm not sure I like the effect on the church, it looks like its been pencilled in, maybe its a sharpening problem, Tims already mentioned the halos.

Still its a great shot regardless, but if it were mine those would be the things I disliked.

Many thanks for the comments - and I'll watch out for the halos next time!

I think Gareth's onto something - I like the bottom part of the first. The verticals (trees, people) and horizontals do work well, and the people wandering about and sitting on the embankment are great. For the whole image to work, I think the buildings above would have to be directly facing the camera - as it is they slant away and spoil the symmetry below (or apparent symmetry - I see from the stairs that the embankment is really sloping away too).

I'm afraid I don't like no. 2. Partly because it seems over-sharpened - as people have mentioned. But also - and I seem to be in a minority here - I don't think the composition works at all. What is the shot of? The trees are there as a framing device, which is fine. However, in the middle there's a bit of a void - an empty path. And Notre Dame, for me, is peculiarly close to the edge of the frame. Of course it's good to try to frame subjects in unusual ways (particularly much photographed ones such as this), but this doesn't work IMO. Ironically, on the vertical plane, I feel the cathedral is a bit central - I'd probably place it lower, cropping off some of the bottom of the image. I do like the people included in the frame - they give a sense of scale and add interest.
