I have the HD 55 - 300 WR....I think its a great lens.
I paid £200 for it second hand (Mint, as new, in box) about a year ago, so at the time wasn't that much more than the standard 55 - 300 used price.
personally, if i had the standard one, and a decent WR one came up, at a decent price, i would go for it purely for the WR, for what would be a relatively small outlay.
i must say as well mind, it "seems to me" that it performs better (definitely hunts less) on the K3 rather my previous k5.

I had both and I would say not at all. There is nothing this new one does that the old one didn't do just as well. In my case, I'd say better. Though it's probably a very subjective statement. Given the choice again, I would've saved on that upgrade and spend the money on a different lens altogether. Don't know much about HD coatings, and what they really add to the basket, but my old 55-300 had no flare issues and perfect starbursts

Thanks for the comments. It's not a lens I've used a lot and didn't get all that great results with but on reading through the forum it seemed that putting any kind of filter on seemed to degrade the image, so when it is in use it's "naked". I was quite pleased with the results I got and as it seems the WR is the main reason for "upgrading" I think I'll wait for a bargain to come along.

I would have thought that living in Newbiggin every lens you possess would have to be WR if not totally water proof to 30 m
I have had both and could not tell the difference image wise between them so I sold the WR and kept the DA300
