The 1.7 I have does a wonderful job, but I was sure I was missing something, and I was.

I have a pentax 50mm A series 1.7. And I just cant get on with the manual focus, Any tips, I may just sell the lens and buy the 50mm 1.4, as i know when using in low light the 50mm 1.4 will make the camera flash strobe to help with the auto focus!

If you mean about the AE-L button, try the Green button instead.

Managed to get the cam to select shutter speed using green button-brilliant-success!!
Cant manage to press shutter and turn focus ring, I put cam in AF mode with manual lens fitted, set mode dial to manual, sort out exposure and press shutter button and it activates. not sure what is going wrong.

I don't know the K200D intimately but other models have an option in the Custom Menu that allows you to enable or disable this function. With it enabled the camera will only fire if the focus indicator is lit, with it disabled (which it sounds like you have) the camera will fire when you press the shutter button regardless of the focus situation.Managed to get the cam to select shutter speed using green button-brilliant-success!!

Can't tell you the exact name of the function off the top of my head I'm afraid but it should be reasonably obvious when you find it.

Catch-in-focus should be near the bottom of the Custom Setting menu. Isn't it there?
