It may have been discontinued a while ago (hence we don't remember the announcement) and is only now going out of stock. Either that or places like SRS have decided that at over £400 (retail price for new stock) they won't sell and thus aren't bothering to stock it.

From their website, Microglobe appear to still have them in stock - £254...

I wouldn't be surprised if it has been discontinued given that the sdm 55mm f1.4 and the 43mm f1.9 are available. Do we really need a 50mm f1.4 as well?

That's at least £200 cheaper than the first and £400 cheaper than the second? Yes!

The 50 1.4 has been discontinued at least 4 times that I can remember. The recent high prices have hurt its appeal, but I'll be surprised if we've seen the last of this old faithful.
you don't have to be mad to post here

but it does help

I can still order these from Pentax. I have a couple in stock - the current price is £319. I've just put it back on the website (am not sure why it went missing!)

I'm actually still hoping they will do some cheap primes like they used to do.
Maybe something like a DA 24/2.8 or 28/2.8, a 35/2, 50/1.7, 135/2.8 and 200/4 with a new price around the £200 to £300... they could ask £50 more if they include weather sealing

Don't you think this might work or has the world move to zooms now?

I'll sell you my SMC-A 50mm f1.7 for £200!

If you like primes, there's plenty of manual focus SMC-A lenses still out there for reasonable money, it just depends how much you value AF on a prime lens. I don't find it too much of an issue as I use zooms most of the time, or my FA50 macro which is better than any other Pentax 50mm lens at any equal aperture. I just have the A 50 as a nostalgia item to remind me of my middle years!

However, for big fast telephotos (fast) AF is very important, but then, Pentax don't have any of those either, it would also be rather pointless until they have a body AF system that can utilise it!
Best regards

Richard,

There is making a sensible suggestion and then there is "taking the p". £200 for an SMC-A 50 f1.7!

He can have mine for £175 or £200 for the f1.4 !
