(preface for mods: I understand no images but I thought this was more of a tip off/review and I would have posted it in general chat, no probs if you want to delete the images or relocate it in a more appropriate part of the forum)

OK I have a passing interest in LED stuff.

Not photography deal but for night shooters it might be of interest, hang it off your tripod. Another use for your flash AA batteries.

Was in Halfords today and spotted these at 14.99 including 4AA Duracell batteries (!!! 19.99 on their website so this is might be an in store error). Just watch when you get to the till as their EPOS might have the wrong price. Just check the shelf edge label if you are buying and correct them. This is at least 10 less than you can get on the internet.

These I think are the 185 lumen lanterns. They have high/low settings and an emergency strobe setting. The LED emitter swivels providing a lantern or a forward torch style. 300g loaded with the batteries. Comes with hand loop and carabiner. The LEDs flash to help you locate in pitch dark.

If this is the right lantern 25 hours on high, 45 hour on low.

Don't be fooled by the pics as this is a really bright light.

Beam pattern on lantern mode

Torch mode beam is lovely, even and smooth. Perfect for close work in a defined space. It is not a pencil thin beam.

Anyway considering the cost of batteries on their own this is about a decent price for a cracking little lantern. And as many of us do night shoots and carry 4AA's ready for a flash or camera then this might be of some use. Handy for the emergency cupboard, even.

Cons: loading the batteries is slightly fiddly and the hanging loop dangles while standing flat.

(Its the perfect little brother to the 300 Lumen 3D Varta lantern on Amazon 25 this one lasts for days !!)
Lurking is shirking.!

Some useful ideas there, so I've moved it to General Chat where it won't be eventually removed.

Also worth looking at these and the smaller round one. They have fairly strong magnets in the back and will stick to any suitable metal, the larger one is bright enough to illuminate a medium sized room.

Normally I won't touch Rolson kit but they just buy these in and rebrand them, so providing it works properly when new (no dud LEDs on the four or so I know of) you'll be fine. My little cousin managed to bounce-test one off a tarmac drive from around three feet and it still worked, albeit minus a magnet and in need of a bit of snapped internal plastic gluing back.

Dougf8 - reckon you got an in store error 'cos Bath Halfords had it at 19.99 this morning. Not desperate for an LED lantern, so gave it a miss.

But an interesting idea all the same which will be stored at the back of the mind for retrieval sometime in the future.
