Go for it.
My 400mm is the simpler and much older M version, optically the same I think as the K, and indeed the earlier 42mm Takumar.
It's a very sharp lens though. Your FA* should be even better.
From a design point of view, it's not difficult to make a good tele (I believe), and an expensive modern one should be very good indeed.

Even with the SMC coating, the fewer the elements the less flare there will be, so a simpler telephoto of more limited aperture could be better optically.

finally i will buy the fa 400mm edif because pentax canada drop the price of this lens and i saw some picture on a web site, shot at f 5.6 and they were quite sharp(sure it's on a screen but they were better than my sigma 135-400mm!!!).
