Are you asking for someone to offer you one for sale, or to suggest one to buy?

New or second-hand?

300mm at the long end? Or somewhere in the middle?

I bought a used Pentax SMC 75-300 FAJ for about £100 (can't remember the exact number) and I've been very pleased with it so far.

Can't be any more help than that, sorry.

Define reasonably priced, to some people £700 on a FA31F1.8 is nothing where as for others £160 for a FA50F1.4 is the earth.

Just using them as examples.

I found a FA 75-300 in a local shop (second hand) for £40 (if I recall correctly).

Oops, meant FAJ

It is silver/black, not the all black.

PS. I must say a lot of people are on late tonight.

I guess you mean a relatively cheap zoom that goes up to 300mm.

See these two reviews:

www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/tamron_70300_456_pentax/index.htm

www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/sigma_70300_456/index.htm

Also consider a second-hand Pentax 80-320mm or 100-300mm.

Yes, that's the one I've got. £40 a real bargain then

The Tamron 70-300mm was made for you! It's just eighty quid and nice and light for the type. It is prone to purple chromatic aberrations (colour shaddows) in high-contrast situations, but there are worse things to worry about in life

See http://www.rafcte.com/airtattoo/ ) and I think that the Techno lense is cheap enough to be a solution. Otherwise I might be tempted by the Sigma 170-500 which I really don't want.

*I had nothing much to lose as I was only able to take pictures with it wide open. That was better than nothing, but was annoying me. I hoped a little carefully positioned WD40 would help, but surface tension between the iris blades just made matters worse. So I dug out the jeweler's screwdrivers and dived in.

My reassembly skills are now better now than 35 years ago when I dismantled my first radio to see what was inside. It took me a long time to save up for a new radio.

Andrew might have been referring to an older Tamron 70-300 with a different design, I don't know. (Tamron have been making 70-300s for a long time).

Anyway it's unlikely that anything will go wrong with yours. I've not heard of any reliability problems previously. Apart from the zooming being a bit stiff, the build quality seems very good to me.

Sorry, I didn't mean to put you off. My broken Tamron 70-300 LD is... er, about 10 years old, and it spent most of that time on a shelf not being used. Even with a sticking iris/diaphragm it was still a good lense. In fact it was only when I turned to aperture priority mode that I noticed there was a problem. If it had been an f2.8 lense I might have noticed sooner.

Anyway, I've had no problem buying another Tamron, especially as the Tecno price is less than half the cost of my original lense. It's also a newer version so I don't think you can draw any reliability conclusions from my example.

Hope that helps undo the concerns I sowed. I look forward to receiving mine later today.

My local Camera shop has one in he also has a SIGMA UC 100-300mm F4.5-6.7 which he say will walk the floor with the tamron i have always fancied a sigma lens and seeing how quick the go on eBay he wants £67 it came in with a faulty camera customer has never been back would the sigma be a better investment ??

F6.7 is very slow, AF is not specified to work with a lens that slow so although it probably will (hey, it's a Pentax) it will be less reliable than it might otherwise be

Baring in mind that this is coming from someone who hasn't used either, I'd take the Tamron over that Sigma any day of the week.

The good Sigma is the 70-300 APO, (and the 100-300 constant F4, but that's a £700 lens) the 100-300 F4.5-6.7 is their lowest of the low base model and I'd be surprised if it's any good.
you don't have to be mad to post here

but it does help
