3 day old moon

Father Ted
Posted 20/04/2010 - 20:20 Link
I decided to charge my battery and get my telescope back out. I discovered that photographing the moon in its early states is difficult as DoF appears to be quite small. I say "appears" as in reality the out of focus area is many tens of miles away from the in focus area.
Still, excuses done
What do you think?

The orientation is different as a result of the eyepiece lenses I used.

No. 1 is infinitely better than No. 2, which looks very soft IMHO.

How much of a crop is this :

I'm forced to agree regarding number 2. I struggled with focus, I really miss my split screen

I get confused with how to define a crop, so here's the image straight off the camera, just resized for the forum.

When did you take these FT?...The reason I ask is that I went out with my bazoka (yes,I`ve finally got it,the Sigma that is) on saturday evening at about 20:30 and I noticed that the sky looked grey and dusty in my shots so I`m wondering if I`m actually capturing the ash cloud from Eyjafjallajokull.

Funnily enough, Saturday night, about 20:30
It could be you were picking up on the ash.

Wonderful images.

So annoyed at not having a camera adapter for a large Russian telescope that I have.

Will be asking you for advice on that point.

Best regards

No 1 for me also - it has picked up the surface relief well in that phase.

Number 1 is a winner. Love it.
If you can't say something nice about Pentax, you won't say anything at all.

Apparently.

Just need to extract the telescope from the loft to get the eyepiece dimensions and then find out what I need.

No. 1 is great, is it possible to reduce the exposure a bit to recover the detail in the outer edge of the moon?

I have a mirror telescope that I would sell if anyone is interested
£40.00

I bought it for my son and he has not really used it.

Eyepieces tend to come in two sizes ( as far as I'm aware ), 1 1/4 inch and erm...another (Mine are all 1 1/4 ).

You'll need as a minimum, one of these
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Pentax-camera-T-ring-T-ring-for-telescope-adapters_W0QQite...
That will allow you to use the telescope as a massive lens, straight on the front of the camera. That works well for the moon.

You could also add one of these
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1-25-T-Mount-M42-mount-Combination-Adaptor_W0QQitemZ220534...
This will allow you to fit eyepieces before the camera for extra magnification, but focusing becomes much harder. Hence the second image above

At this rate FT,you`re going to have to write up a tuitional on how to use and get the best out of your telescope/camera hook up.
