The tamron is also an excellent lens + at the moment it's quite cheaper

My vote is for the Pentax DA 55-300. It is an excellent lens, well worth the money.

Hi!
I'm using primarily my Pentax da 55-300. Very nice picture quality. At least mine is sometimes a bit hunty lens, but manual focus first before autofocus and that problem mostly solved. I'm using a protective Hoya Digital Pro filter, which might affect performance, haven't tried it without yet. Btw, do people here use a protective filter and do they find it affects performance or IQ?

Some do, I don't. My feeling is that filters should only be used when necessary as adding any extra glass to the optical system can only lead to a reduction in IQ, however slight.Btw, do people here use a protective filter and do they find it affects performance or IQ?
Others feel the need to protect the lens from damage, arguing that it's cheaper to replace a filter than a lens. Having said that, a smashed filter can damage the lens anyway with the broken glass shards.
I would try with and without your filter and see what you think.

Thanks for the swift answer to my question. I didn't come to think of that the filter might also damage the lens if destroyed. Should try and see if the performance and or IQ is better without the protector. Luckily the da 55-300 isn't very expensive lens if it would get damaged. Just take care. I use my non-WR lenses in the rain (modest rain anyway) but shield the lens and keep it as dry as possible. The same applies to dust.
Otherwise, you wouldn't take it anywhere such as Egypt, which is dusty enough!
In very bad conditions I might use a filter for protection from such things as excessive dust or sea-spray.
