16gb memory card

off on holiday next week with my k-r and i also bought a sandisk extreme pro 16GB card for it.. can anyone advise me how many photos can be stored on this card?? so i dont need to worry about erasing...

It depends whether you are shooting in RAW or JPEG. I use 8 GB cards in my K-7 and shoot RAW, and a card will hold (from memory) ~320 images. Therefore I would expect a 16 GB card to take somewhere around 650 RAW images, or a much bigger number of JPEGs...

Video is not very memory efficient on the KR, (I don't do much but 107mb for 25 seconds)

Jpegs are typically just over 5mb each going up to 7mb when a lot of detail in picture and down to just over 3 for a simple picture.

Raw (either type) are typically 17mb

I think you have a very big card for the job!

Personally I do edit a bit of an evening on holiday to elininate the obvious errors or overdone bracketing. You have a very fast frame rate so if photographing moving objects you'll quickly end up with a lot of similar photos.

Enjoy, it's a lovely camera. Do pack a spare battery and remember your charger!

as a beginner mat w i think i'll stick with jpeg all the way and use all the 5000 that are available. and bill, i blame you as your words have got me hooked now. i love taking it out of the case, i suppose as i get better the addiction will get even stronger...cheers mate.

I would take 2 or 3 cards rather than one big one... spread the risk if something goes wrong with it (and you'd also always have a spare).

Say if you took two 8MB cards. When one is full, you can stick the other one in without all the usual going back and deleting shots, which isn't what you want to be doing if you happen to urgently need to take pictures.

You can then make some space on the full card at your leisure the next day.

Mind you, you'll struggle to fill a 16MB card if you're shooting jpeg.

Integral 16Gb Class 10s are only 16 quid each now..... take a few
