I have nothing to compare with...but I sometimes do not like 16-50 to think too long while focusing.

I still do not understand, is it matter of K10D or lens or my skills

I don't have an SDM lens but from what I've read it seems they are more likely to slow down in cold temperatures.

Winter in Estonia probably isn't the best time to judge its performance, wait until Summer comes around again and see how it behaves then.

No, I wouldnt think so.
Its, that it thinks too long - tries focusing several times. Before it does the final.

Estonian winters are not so cold at all. Its mostly round zero and I hate it. My wish would be around - 5. Thats fine. Not that wet time and mostly without snow.

By the way, while taking pics at -15 my 10D was absolutely OK. No need to change or warm batteries. During couple of hours nothing unusual happened Although I was prepared for that.

Well I got back from the Spain today and my 16-50mm Ebay purchase was waiting for me.
Unfortunately not had a chance to do much with it (brought the 16-45mm back as well) but will have a go tomorrow.

I must admit I put it on the K10D and thought they had sold me a faulty lens at first ... ruddy thing wouldn't focus.
It's my first SDM lens .. I didn't realise they were THAT quiet.

Just bought the 16-50 2.8 DA* on the strength of the AP review. This lens is their zoom lens of the year with a 94% rating.
Regarding MACRO this is a a much abused word which has almost lost its original meaning, like criticism and alternative/s.Strictly speaking macro is ,for example, a postage stamp recorded actual size as opposed to reproduced actual size in print form. Anything larger than this,ie.magnified at the taking stage, is microphotography.

Hello, all.

Thanks to all for the help which I previously received on the subject of which 'standard' lens to buy.

I considered the Pentax 16-45 & 16-50 lenses, plus the Sigma 18-50 & 17-70 lenses. In the end though, after much research and soul-searching, I opted for the Pentax 17-70 f4 lens.

In fact, I've just come off the phone having placed my 'first' order with SRS (not before time), and as a forum member got free P&P...my thanks to Doug at SRS.

Again, thanks to all here within the forum for your help too.
Looking forward now to the new toy!!!

Regards to all.
