100mm F2.8 W/R Macro

Just got the new lens in our shop, had a brief play with it today. First results are highly impressive. hope to be able to post some test pictures soon. Don't think you are going to be disapointed with this lens. Dave

Dave, do you have happen to have a DFA 100 f/2.8, just wondering if you are able to make a comparison

Hi Greytop, no we are are a new Pro Centre, trying to get one from another branch so i can compare. Will let you know.. Was out in heavy snow to day, nice not to have to worry about getting it wet, Dave

I'd be interested* to hear how they compare. There seems to have been some mention of a "round" aperture.

(*no I wouldn't I've just bought the non WR :roll

AFAIK the new one is optically identical to the non-WR (which I have also recently purchased, in its Samsung disguise) with the exception of the aperture: the new WR has more aperture blades giving (in theory) rounder, smoother bokeh.

All that differs is
- housing (aluminium +WR)
- rounded diaphragm blades
- coating (Super Protection)

Also in theory rounded diaphragm blades does not give rounder, smoother bokeh.
Bokeh is simply the light distribution inside the Circle of Confusion, and yes that will become round but not smooth.
The smoothness of the out of focus blur is primarily defined by the optics so no you'll not see a difference in the quality of the blur but the round highlights will look more round instead of an octagon.

For someone that has a DFA 100mm the only reason to upgrade is for the housing really, better build quality and WR are nice things to have.
