'raw' paint

K5 DA55mm/1.4, iso200, 1/1600s, f/2.2, strong sunlight

The top of her head is very bright, I have tried some pp in iphoto. Would I be able to improve this type of picture by shooting in RAW and using Aperture on the mac?

I am not sure if the bright are detracts from the image, and am happy with the isolation from the background.

I've been stunned at the difference I get using RAW and Aperture - don't know if it's because I'm a better 'shooter' now, or it really is because I now shoot RAW.

Yes I do 'tweak' them - but my piccies are no longer flat - they have more life in them .

All I can say is - have a go , you may find you've gained a lot , but unless you try it you won't know

Now you can get Aperture from the App store it's no longer the nasty shock it was - the trial may well convince you - so go on - you know you want to - have a go

If you do have the image in RAW, email me and i'll have a go. But it looks like it might be a borderline case and the middle of the bright areas may be irretrievable.

Ideally you should have metered from the bright areas then hit AEL or switched to manual with the same settings. With the k5 you may be as well setting the camera to deliberately underexpose then boosting exposure afterwards in PP.

I tried to have a play with the jpeg picture and found it a little too far gone to bring back and do any justice to it. As Pentaxophile said shot it under exposed and adjust in Lightroom or Aperture afterwards

Thanks for the replies, advice and offer. I think it will be wise to shoot in both in the future, then make a decision re aperture.

This is a quick jpeg edit in PS using a duplicate 'multiply' layer to make the image denser/darker, and then erasing the shadow areas.


I had to crop the worst bits out, but I prefer the more intimate crop anyway. The top of the forehead and hair would only be rescuable in RAW, if at all! Hope you don't mind my intervention.

Nice work, that is a better composition, and removes the problem areas.

Nigel, in the K-x there is a raw and Jpeg programme that you can use have you found that one yet in your camera you have a K5 it will probably have the same setting, cheers Trixie :

It doesn't cause much of a delay. You'd notice if you were in continuous shooting mode, but otherwise probably not.

Thanks for the info. It is a fairly large fast card.
