I was on Hyram's boat (afloat) at the time the photograph was taken

As Hyram seems to have 'stolen' some of my photographs, I thought that I had better register in my own name

It has been cropped quite heavily already, since we could not get too close to the subject matter for obvious reasons

I don't think it needs cropping anymore as it gives the right sense of isolation.

Nice shot Belinda, I'm for cropping it further too, take the right hand side off and put the boat roughly on the third.

Do you mean crop it so that the boat is one third in from the right hand edge :

Hello Belinda, I too like the image just as it is. I take the 'rule of thirds' as a guidline, if it works better use it, if not then put the object where it looks best.

I like your crop the way it is, gives a real sense of space and solitude, nice image, but not too keen on purple frame!

Yes, the "rule of thirds" is an imaginary grid (like a noughts and crosses grid) it is one of the primary rules for composition, placing the focal point or point of interest on a "third" (ie; where the grid lines intersect) is said to improve composition, of course rules are meant to be broken and it doesn't always work well but in this case I think it does, others have disagreed and they are probably quite right too, eye of the beholder etc etc.
Try using the thirds rule whenever you compose images but also try it otherways too. Just bear in mind you dont have to be exactly on a third, anywhere roundabout works just as well.
