It's so you can rotate a polarizing filter if you have one fitted Greetings one and all

It also allows you to use manual focus if you have the lens hood stowed backwards on the lens, and makes putting on or removing the lens cap with the hood in place much easier.
If you're a bit slow on the uptake like me, you might like to know that the lens hood obscures the built-in flash at the wide end. Not that you'd usually need a lens hood and flash at the same time, but it can ruin a flash picture if you leave it on.
