Personally I find both the MX and the *istDS just right in terms of size and ergonomics. However, it is true that some photographers do find them too small. In this case adding the winder to the MX helps a lot. I'm not sure if the *istDS has a grip available, but no doubt someone can tell us!
Having owned both of these camera's, I would agree.Personally I find both the MX and the *istDS just right in terms of size and ergonomics. I find the balance of the DS to be perfect, but then I have relatively small hands and fingers. I would be concerned that the addition of the grip would upset the feel/balance of the camera however I can see the advantages when using longer lenses and for those with bigger digits. Would be interested to find out if anyone has used the grip?

I did have a go with an *istD woth grip, and thought it was a pity to spoil the balance of the camera with it!
Why make a superb instrument heavy and unwieldy?
Still, many others may disagree.

On a side note, if anybody is looking for a brand new *istD (not DS or DL) with an FAJ 18-35mm get in touch with Cameratiks of Edinburgh, http://www.camerabase.demon.co.uk/home.html.
Price is £799.99 though but they may be prepared to haggle as they have had it since near the release date and never been able to sell it.

I'd be interested if anyone knows how to get one. I love the handling of the Z1p with the grip fitted and I'd be very interested in a grip for the DS.

I use the grip with my D and wouldn't be without it - tried the DS when it came out, and after 1/2 hour in the camera shop my hand was going into cramp - my long fingers just seem to need the extra purchase, that's one of the reasons I went for the D in the end. As has been said once or twice before I'm sure, the vertical release is also a big bonus, and when I take the grip off I really miss this facility.
If it's the extra weight that bothers you, you can always use it without the batteries!
Daniel
P.S. I seem to remember there was a whole load of posting about third-party vertical grips for the DS a couple of months back.

Pentax don't make a grip for the DS but http://www.dicain.com/2002/zb/view.php?id=notice&no=61 seems to.
Ken, if you think the DS is small, have a play with the Canon 350D (Digital Rebel XT in US), its even smaller.

The handling of my DS was improved by the addition of a 3rd-party grip strap (meant for a Canon of some kind but which fits ok) however I'd definitely be interested is something designed specifically for the DS.
