*ist DL in Av mode

Hi

I am new to the forum. I had a search for my problem before posting this, but sorry if it has been covered before.

I have a *ist DL and wish to take some pics in Av mode so I can control depth of field. However, I can't seem to adjust the aperture below f19 and it doesn't step up and down with each click of the e-dial as I would expect it to.

I am using the standard 18-55mm zoom f3.5-f5.6 DA-type lense supplied with the camera, but have tried with other lenses with an A setting on the aperture ring and have a similar problem, though I did get down to f8.5 with my F4-F22 lense from my 'film' SLR camera, which is a Pentax MZ-50.

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks

It sounds to me that there might be a problem with the edial. Is it the same on manual?

Hi Ken

Yes it is the same in manual mode. However, the e-dial does adjust EV compensation when the Av button is pressed - so it does do something!

I just checked and it doesn't do much to the epsoure speed when in Tv mode either - just gives 1/4000 down to - well I saw 1/750 once - but again it doesn't step neatly with each click.

Do you think this is mecahnical? e.g. dirt or something - or might it be a setting or an electronic or firmware problem?

Try removing the lens and clean the electrical contacts on both lens and camera.

Use a lint free cloth wetted with a little Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA).

Refit the lens and try again.

If you have another lens, try that too.

Also, make sure that you are waiting for the previous shot preview display to finish. The e-dial will not work whilst the previous image is still showing.

Hi

All cleaned and I swapped lenses too.

In Av or Tv mode I get random numbers almost.

e.g. Av

27 32 32 27 32 32 27 22 19 16 16 32 32 32 27 32 32 32 27 22 19 16 22

in Tv mode:

4000 4000 4000 4000 3000 3000 4000 4000 3000 2000 1500 1500 2000 4000 4000 4000 3000 3000 4000 4000 3000 2000 1500 1000 1500 2000 4000 4000

OK, I'm bored with that now!

Any more ideas Ken/Peter/John/anyone? I'm thinking it must be the wheel contacts now...

Thanks John - this is all without taking pictures - just preparing to take some later today, if I can!

The only other thing I would suggest is to load a fresh set of batteries, download the latest firmware for your model and reflash it, then try again.

If you get the same results, it's off to the camera hospital I think.
