"Bridging Camera"

My better half has decided she'd like a better camera, ( not that she ever uses the one she's got ).
So, as she wouldn't want an SLR, hates using mine, I thought of what I think is called a bridge camera. (More functions than your average compact digital, but less than an SLR).

Can anyone recommend one that will give decent results, but won't cost a fortune?

I used to have a Fuji 5700 (now the 5800), it was a cracking camera, good macro too. You can pick them up new for about £100.

In all the various tests in all the mags. the whole of the Panasonic Lumix range seem to fare very well. I have never used one but after reading the reports and tests a friend bought one of the models and is very happy with it.
Born again biker with lots of Pentax bits. Every day I wake up is a good day. I'm so old I don't even buy green bananas.

I first went digital with a Panasonic FZ-27 which was, and is, excellent. Its good automatic performance can be replaced by full manual. I think current version is FZ-28.

Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

Why not a Canon G9?

As an aside I'd love to be able to find a digital rangefinder with a decent sized sensor. I cannot afford a Leica and given their problems wouldn't want one but the Epson RD1 was a surprise.
