Canon, the market leaders (HAH!) announced a drop in profits. Pentax are going from strength to strength. There's no accounting for morons. In truth Pentax have too small a market share for Jessops to bother with, but hey, Jessops won't survive 2009.
Jessops are....
I have only visited Jessops, on 2 occasions, and the staff were :
1.Not knowledgable on the products.
2.Disinterested, and could not care less.
3.Not prepared to "Price Match" a lens even though it was on sale at a cheaper price at another Jessops Branch!

Sounds about right for our favourite camera shop.
I haven't been into a Jessops since November last year, even then they were struggling to shift boxes. I asked about price match and was told no chance, so I ordered online and thought stuff Jessops.
It's a shame that the morons who they employ are so blinkered in their view of photography, or is that in the job description?

BTW related to this.. anyone know a good camera shop in Birmingham.
I know there's LCE in Worcestor but that's a bit of a trek although Wolverhampton or Redditch would work too. Redditch being easy to get to and Wolves being where I go to uni.

Guess what!
I stopped shopping at Jessops years ago simply because I found thier staff lack knowledge, this was nothing to do with stocks of Pentax or any indifference towards the brand, it was just simply the majority of thier staff didn't know what they were talking about.
I started shopping at Jacobs insted, sadly they closed thier Leeds branch.
I stopped using my Jessops branch , for several reasons ,one, they never had any stock other than the latest Canon-Nikon lower end kit and maybe a few “point and shoot” cameras.Guess what!

But the main reason is the lack of a brain or knowledge with the staff.
The only person there who had any idea about photography was the young girl who did the film processing.
I don’t know why Pentax and Jessops fell out, but would you, if you were in business, give a firm like Jessops 60 days credit, I know I would not, far too risky in my opinion.
I know I deal with SRS now and they and others like them give me the service and help I want.
They will be the survivors (SRS and the like) not the companies like Jessops.

I think it comes down to enthusiasm for the product you are selling. Jessops are box shifters and they 'generally' employ at that level. This is reflected in the feel and general service you (don't) get and the sort of stock they will hold. Bottom line is 'generally' you will not find the knowledge (balanced opinion) and enthusiasm for photography at these places.
Thankfully retailers like SRS Microsystems are in a different league

I think we all agree that A Jessops are crap, and B pay peanuts and all you get are monkeys( but perhaps we are insulting the primates of this world when we say this!

I think we are. Give 10 chimps a camera and chances are great one produces a decent picture. I am not over confident the same happens when you line up 10 box shifters. ( but perhaps we are insulting the primates of this world when we say this!

I bought my K100D from the Worcester Jessops (where there are two branches within 800 yards) and the (very) young lady was very helpful and the manager who intervened at one point was also helpful.
It probably depends a whole lot on who builds the team.
As for the enquiry about photo shops round Birmingham I'd like to know as well! Obviously Worcester is local to me and I'm not impressed (despite my comments about Jessops), Redditch - are there ANY photo shops apart from Jessops - Wolves ought to have something but I bet it doesn't.
I tried to find a Leica dealer in teh Midlands and I think there's nothing for many miles around.
Thanks goodness for on line shops.
Mike
