I dug my Pentax WR 50-200mm out tonight (as I presume that's what you are thinking of using one on) so that I can give you a comparison with and without the Raynox. Will do a few shots tomorrow. I normally use it on my 90mm macro lens but focus is a real PITA if using the full magnification.

Pentax-A* 300mm f4
When Amateur Photographer Magazine tested the 300mm A* it was 315mm at infinity, so longer to start with plus being a non-IF design the lens gets longer as you focus closer. I suppose the close focus of 4M isn't quite as bad as it sounds, because the image size is probably the same as the DA* at 3.6M
