Weekly competition 596 - Built by man
Avian by Perspicador
Not quite what I had in mind for this week's competition though no doubt it's built by man. I was thinking along the lines of eye grabbing permanent structures such as engineering marvels like the Forth or Tower Bridges or architectural gems ranging from cathedrals and castles to modern works like London's Shard. I should have made that more clear when I introduced the topic. Your's is a perfectly good shot of a passing aeroplane - but here today gone tomorrow.

Dead Sea scrolls cave by Vic Cross
This hits the nail on the head. A dramatic picture of a world heritage site beautifully composed and photographed. Its a one-colour photo but one that avoids monotony because of the fascinating weather-worn and textured surfaces.

Cranes by MHOL190246
These giant cranes are well portrayed as mono silhouettes against a subdued sky which has just a hint of colour. Good choice of presentation. The viewer's eye can easily pick out intricate details in a seemingly complex pattern.

Criccieth Castle at night by PRYorkshire
A delightful picture with subdued but exquisite detail. The floodlit castle on top if its hill dominates but does not overpower the town below with its lovely detail, much of it merely hinted at. People , streets, houses with dimly lit windows are all there for the exploring eye to discover.

The Orwell Bridge by NigelK
Agreed. concrete can be attractive, depending on the context in which it is used. This bridge is wonderful, helped by Nigel's handling of his photography and the light available. The reflection in the still waters gives a perfect reverse image which adds so much to the quality of the photograph. The river bank bottom, right shores up the composition - it would be a mistake to have cloned or cropped it out.

An ediface to a god by SPAD
A moody mono of this Derbyshire church, taken as the shadows lengthened in a September evening. THe surounding trees and bushes frame it nicely. I like the mood it conveys but question the angle at which the church spire is leaning. I can only guess this was due to wide angle distortion: lens at 20mm. Somehow this adds to the appeal of the image but I'm sure purists would disagree.

Lathe and caliper - both man made to make things. Lathe and Caliper by Davidwozhere
Crisply photographed as is essential in this style of photography. Not the finished object but the tools used to create greater things. I like the concept. The foreground cold metalic caliper obviously appears in mono but the background lathe has a lovely warm glow.

Hydraulic Power by Flan
Based on the forground rust coloured device I briefy thought: 'This is a grab shot.' Of course its a lot more than that. The grab is an essential part of the composition and in addition to being man-made, contrasts well with the modern architecture in the back ground. This, reflected in the water makes for an attractive example of 'man-made.' The lovely late evening warm light adds to the appeal.

Fallingwater by Gareth Morgan
The lovely warm autumn colours along with the amazing architectural structure constructed around a water fall give this image immediate appeal. No surprise its a World Heritage site. Gareth's photo concentrates the eye on the essential ingredients in this photo. I imagine it was a busy and crowded location location but he has found an ideal viepoint to bring the best composition to the picture.

Form and function by Noelcmn
Another well composed image and one that turns a straightforward modern building into a graphic picture. Noel puts the sharp corner of the building centre stage with two sides receeding to form an eye catching v-shapein perfect balance. The blue sky and the building's walls are in perfect harmony.

Under the boardwalk by Retsoor
A dramatic picture showing the sturdy nature of the pier from below although a couple of the timbers appear to be rotten. Good positioning by the photographer in placing the camera dead centre to show the tunnel effect of view leading out to sea. An all round satisfying image taken in good light and with a fine blue sky.

David you need to impart to us the contestants what is on your mind where that is important. I have had pictues of the Forth Bridge on here. I refer you to man's quest to fly prior to building viable flyers.
