Graffiti is like Marmite, its hated or enjoyed in equal measure. It is vandalism and defaces our urban areas but it can also enhance a derelict area with vibrant colour, entertain us with humour or delight us with its sheer inventiveness. For this competition I will be looking for all of the above qualities plus an element added by the photographer so that the image is more than a mere copy of someone else's artwork. Usual rules, Pentax cameras or their clones, deadline Sunday midnight British time, and the winner is expected to choose next week's subject and judge and comment on the entries. Best of luck David |

Wow...that's special. Considering a freshly painted wall will only invite 'new' artwork. Maybe they just got bored with what was there and it's exactly why they painted over it ?

Pentax weekly competition - Graffiti
Not a big entry but boy the quality was great. I've really enjoyed looking at all of these, especially those that introduced human elements into the images.
Tattered flag by perspicador
It's certainly a tattered flag as explained in the title and appears, according to the EXIF, to have been shot at an amazingly high ISO but I find it difficult to relate this to the subject of graffiti. Sorry if I've missed something that's obvious to everyone else.
The Kids are alright by Nigelk
This is an amazing site for graffiti artists on the Southbank and you've added a lot of interest by including the skateboarding kids. I like the blurred action and the use of an ultra wide angle lens to add to the drama.
John Lennon Wall girls by kh1234567890
This could be the same location, I don't know, but wherever it is it's worth a visit with a camera. The wonderful splash of colour is nicely balanced by the two girls examining the artwork.
Sharing a hot dog by Michaelblue
What fun. The creative approach with its touch of humour really appeals to me. The kid is a great little actor and the cartoon character is terrific. Both the artwork and the photography are top draw.

He looks like he's doing time so this is a nice bit of story-telling. The anguished face and the iron bars are all that's needed to create a powerful and emotive image. Well spotted.
Graffiti in abandoned Cebadillo church by Marquemoon
You did well to see this and even better to photograph it. The artist has been creative in working his image around the window while you've done well to photograph it so well.
Grosmont to York by JAK
It seems such a shame that artwork such as this will be wiped out so soon after it was created but you got in quick to make sure it recorded for posterity. It adds a splash of colour and interest to York's Exhibition Square and promotes the North Yorkshire Moors Railway's 2017 season in fine fashion. I'm glad you managed to get the heavily laden couple in the frame to add extra interest.

This is unusual, graffiti is most commonly seen in urban areas but here's one way out in the countryside and seemingly on farm land. It's also unusual in that it was shot on film (outdated) and on a Z1. Well done on that score. I'm trying to recall if the BSB initials date way back to the mad cow era which devastated many farms back in the 1990s. Its certainly a different take on a popular photographic subject.

The idea to select graffiti for this week's topic was inspired by Andrew's recent posting of Sheffield street scenes which also included some graffiti. Like i-Berg's excellent 'prisoner picture', very similar in content but quite different in approach, this gripping image demands the attention of the viewer and packs a story line with a massive punch. The photographic quality of the surrounding stonework is also impressive.

Here the artist has been captured at work on his graffiti. The scaffolding belies the idea of a graffiti artist sneaking along and dashing off his painting under the cover of darkness before hurrying away un-noticed. Simon's artist has gone prepared and obviously intends taking time on the job. The quality of the image proves this and Simon's capture is terrific.

Another graffiti artist caught in action and this time we see her face and she doesn't seem to mind her cover being blown. In fact she seems quite happy about it. Its a good quality environmental portrait (that's when someone's been photographed in action at their work) and the picture on the wall is delightfully colourful and vibrant. There's just a tiny splash of bright colour intruding into the picture through a gap in the wall where someone in the distance appears to be getting into a car. It would have been easy to clone out or at least de-saturate that pinky purple colour.

Two artists at work here creating quality piece of wall art. And it's another classy shot of some very clever painting. It sounds like Noel has some sort of rapport with these guys and that's a good thing, Perhaps they tip him off when they are about to pull off some sensational new work.

Zooming during the exposure can produce some very dramatic images and many failed attempts. I've tried it in the past and it aint easy. Magdalena's brave shot at it only partly succeeds. While the technique has added motion it has also introduced some confusion into the image. But it gets massive browny points for trying something different.
Graffiti on the factory walls
This is a super colourful piece of graffiti with terrific clarity and masses of detail. Tim says he deliberately isolated the central portion of the image to lift it away from its dismal surroundings. That worked a treat here. And doesn't much graffiti do just that - brighten otherwise dismal areas.

And finally, just before the judging deadline, a fine shot from Paul using parked cars set against some fine graffiti work in his city. It looks full surround graffiti here as the artwork contuse along diagonally adjacent walls.

Thanks for the HC, comp and super prompt judging. I too would have chosen Michaelblue's; clever photo. Well done the placings and other HCs and all for entering.
Up until Friday morning all I had was a photo of some ancient graffiti on a prison wall in a castle dating from the 1600's (I missed catching the culprit!) so it was with great interest I heard of the Royal Scot being painted on York's city walls in a fleeting comment made on the local radio station on Friday morning. So made the journey to take the photo of it. I liked the fact that the couple standing in front were colour co-ordinated with the loco. Timely for the comp and certainly a limited opportunity, less than a week.

Most of that is ART. I'm so happy that "street art" is gaining traction over "grafitti" because the negative overtones of the latter are often quite unfair. And thanks to all the photo artists for a fantastic showcase.

Good laugh for an early Monday morning, and a wonderfully timed shot. Just love the way that color pops in this predominant blueish image. Worthy winner amid cracking good shots this week. Congrats Michael. And extended to AndrewA and Simonmac, the HC's i-berg, JAK and NigelL. And I concur with Davidwozhere-this is Art, and having a keen interest in this kind of art, its been gratifying to see all these. So, a hearty thanks to Davidtrout for a wonderul challenge, judging and commenting. Always appreciated. Oh, I don't get tipped off- I scrounge the neighborhood

The work I photographed was commissioned as is all of the graffiti and street art in the event. Well worth a visit, and it is in Digbeth!

the York Railway Museum publicity picture shows the importance of photography...
if this wonderful picture is cleaned off tomorrow as expected...
there are, at least this one, and probably other photographers' captures of some wonderful ephemeral art!!
