Now That’s Big! Under this theme I am looking for images that express size, height, great mass etc. It may be an image with major perspective giving the feeling of height/size, it may be an image showing major scale due to the contrast of little and large…… whatever you can come up with…. Have fun! All interpretations will be welcome, inside or outside the box. The usual rules apply. Please remember that entries must have been shot using a Pentax camera, or Samsung equivalent. Good luck everyone. I am looking forward to seeing your entries. |

Thanks for the win John, you gave us a subject that I really enjoyed and it encouraged some very fine entries. My congrataulations to the other competitors, particularly David, Jim, Tars and Trixie. Among the other images I liked a lot was Axel's (as always) and Aura's Salisbury Cathedral. Photographing cathedrals is one of my favourite photographic subjects.
As always with tht best of these weekly compeptions there was a wide variety of interpretation.
As for the next subject, I'll be back with an idea in a couple of hours or so.

Many thanks for an excellent competition subject and judging John. David's was my tip for the winner, a superb and well deserving one.
Mr Storm's fireworks is one of the best of it's genre I have seen for a long time, congrats on second David.
Thanks for my joint third alongside Adrien as well. I must give a special mention to Trixie for garnering a HC in her first ever competition entry, well done Patricia. Well done to Tars, another strong image.
I was particularly taken with Dr Mhuni's entry, clever compositional work and evocative as well.

Brush and Pencil – Johnriley
Pleasant humorous capture of a moment in time. Definitely strong to theme. An image that creates more questions than answers as to “What are they doing?? Where are they going?? A great start to the competition. I would advise not using the word whoppers as a tag…… unless you want a high click count John.
LHC support team at work AxelLuther
I have long been a fan of Axel’s work. The use of strong imagery and detailed craftsmanship make this a very strong image indeed. Showing immense scale keeps it very well in theme. And you can spot it’s an Axel from the thumbnail alone. Great work.
Honey, I blew up the dog ! GaryJohn
Gary very often a title together with the image works well in strengthening it’s overall appeal. This hits that mark in spades and brings a smile to the face – which is a great compliment. A well balanced and structured image which works well to guiding the viewer into the frame along with the low level of the vantage point giving exaggerated perspective.. Maybe a little sharper focus would have improved it but great capture.
Fireworks at Chatsworth House DavidStorm
What a great capture – excellent use of the K5. The sense of scale is evident. Wonderful colour shade and the lighting effect on the crowd is just brilliant. A real wow capture and one of the best firework photos of the season.
In my dark side….. a letterbox crop and giving it the title “The Walking Dead Return Into Hades” works well…. But that’s just me.
Departures Dr Mhuni
An eyecatching capture! Which really takes some study. The strong silhouettes add to the story and together with the lines of the windows form a very well crafted image. It took me a while to figure out the silhouette to the bottom left but when I did it just added to the “airport” feeling.
The Big Wheel in Torquay. Trixie
Patricia your first Pentax competition entry… but hopefully not your last. Well done to Stan for giving you the push. I cricked my neck viewing this image. The angle of shot works fantastically to give the feeling of reach and height. Beautifully captured detail and the change of lighting through the depth of the fan structure sets the atmosphere wonderfully. A great strong image!
Iron Lady Kosh
A very striking statue that I am not familiar with John. The landscape orientation makes it a very bemusing thumbnail. I viewed it as portrait for judging. A great capture for the detail captured. Maybe a little more of the building below would have given it a greater strength to theme for this competition as it would put the scale into a greater perspective.
The Shard- London BAJ
Brian can I start by first congratulating Harriet on graduating. Now to the shard, the perspective lines of this structure are a photographers dream and you have captured them so well from this view point. Very strong to theme. I am guessing it was quite a dull day which has cut a little of the clarity and the reflection often seen in pictures of the shard. Great image.
Perspective on The Shard David Trout
From one shard image to another. The wide angle of this shot has definitely maximised the perspective and feeling of height in this capture. The mono also works well to bolster the hard, big, solid atmosphere. Overcooked treatment??????? Maybe – Sci Fi Master Image definitely! Please submit your Personal feelings on a postcard. Nice one David.
Heaton Skyscape Sandinista
Jim…. Not a Tor in sight. But still a moody Sandinista sky. I really like images that break and bend rules. The fact that you cannot judge this image at a glance and need to study to get the full impact gives it such a strength. The scale of sky to the oh so small figures. GREAT!
Happiness is a big Banana. JimW
Jim…. You’re mad!
I LOVE IT! Image and title!
Salisbury cathedral AuraTodd
Louise a beautiful capture showing scale and magnificence. Lighting in churches and cathedrals can often be very difficult to balance the lights and the darks which you have managed to great effect. Well done.
St John Lighthouse Annaghbain
Jim, I can feel the movement of the waves and am pulling my scarf tighter to keep out the cold. The comparison of the houses to the lighthouse really shows the scale of this magnificent structure. Very appealing as it is taken from the sea and you have resisted the urge to fill the frame with the structure alone.
Canterbury Cathedral Tyronet2000 where did that go?
Bridge of size simonarron
Roesch’s speed demon and a nimble 7. This contrast in size is just wonderful, A great capture and the expression on from within Pedersen’s helmet adds a great tension to the image. Technically very well executed indeed.
A Big Rock Dr Orloff
Adrian, a wonderful capture indeed. The subtle muted colours give the feeling of calm. The slower shutter speed works wonderfully to soften the edges and promote the solidity and strength of the rock. A masterpiece.
Wind Turbine Stopher
In the debate on windturbines and their effect on the environment I stand in support of these magnificent structures. Take the figure and the walkway out of this image it loses all impact as to the size and scale of the imposing turbine. With them in it gives power strength and the Now That IS Big theme is more than satisfied. Great placement Chris.
Huge Aquaduct Tars
High perspective shot showing height scale and grandeur – just what the theme of this comp calls for. The quirky angle and landscape presentation add impact and interest to this hot. Great one Timbo.
Largest scavenger beak NoelCmn
Noel, you little tease, just giving a Glimpse of the monster beak. An image that takes some looking at to get the full story. Gives great support to the theory that Dinosaurs evolved from birds as it haves a reptilian feel to it.
Big Bold and Ugly – PaulB531
Very strong to theme. Again an image giving proportion by comparison to known items. It could also be entered for the theme Yuk! That’s the building not the image. A wider lens may have given a greater perspective effect. Well spotted and I feel for you having to pass that each day.
Big Beastie! AndrewA
A great fun image of the Big Beastie, indeed. I had a go at cropping the left side detail into a box crop and the image still works. Now where’s my hair brush?
For the scores on the Doors:-
First Place - Perspective on The Shard – David Trout
Second Place - Fireworks at Chatsworth House – David Storm
Joint Third Place – A Big Rock Dr Orloff & Heaton Skyscape - Sandinista
HC’s - Huge Aquaduct – Tars & The Big Wheel in Torquay. – Trixie
A big well done to all! – another show of fantastic Pentaxian skills.
