I am no technical judge so I thought this week could be a fun theme. Anything is allowed but the image should be in some way an advert for a product, place or service of some kind. You are then allowed one sentence as a slogan or "strapline" as beleive they call it in the advertising world. As it is a bank hol next Monday I will be happy to judge lots of images (gulp!). Hope this is okay |

This should be interesting. I have never judged anything before- I have been honest (but nice I hope) and this is only my opinion (which has been branded codswallop on many occasions). It feels like quite a big responsibility because I really care about photography (but don’t know that much about it!). Here goes.
“Beat The Blues with a Citroen C1” by Dr Mhuni
A great first entry- I can definitely see this in the pages of a motoring magazine. Like the juxtaposition between the new (the car) and the old (everything else) including that vintage looking scooter. The colour of the car pops out against the more muted colours of the surroundings drawing my eye to the “product”. Then there is an epic mountainous backdrop and interesting sky. My eye is led down the street to the foot of the mountain. Very much what I had in mind. Like it very much.
“Pentax i10 The New Classic” by John Riley
Another juxtaposition between old and new which I think works very well. The simplicity of the shot appeals to me. There is symmetry in the way the model holds the cameras and I like the fact that they are “opposite” colours. The simple palette works too, black camera, white camera blue background and warm skin tone. I really like the phrase “simply hold a pentax”- it does sound like a credible alternative to “Pix your life” I prefer yours. Of course you score extra marks because it’s a Pentax ad too! BTW the older camera looks absolutely mint++.
“Dipping Oil”
A very appealing image. I can imagine this on the wall of an Italian restaurant. I like the fact that you have included the text on the image itself and the play on words works well. It’s a bit blown out at the top but shooting out through a window is not the easiest I imagine. I think the best before dates could be cloned out. Moreton is not too far from me so I think I will go and have a look!
“Foundations of Global Capitalism” by i-Berg.
I really didn’t see this one coming! A sub-versive message. Not an advert as such but I do get it. I think it is difficult to take pictures of art because it speaks for itself and the image becomes secondary to the artwork itself. The message is re-inforced by the muted colouring. We are all doomed!
“Spring Home Improvements? B & Q MEGASALE NOW ON !!! by Dodge69
Best viewed large, the first thing that strikes me here is the good DOF. The eyes and head of the wasp are crisp and this is a very nice macro mage with excellent fine detail. Good colours and I also like the lines of the woodgrain which draw you into the image. Ideally the wasp could have been a little more “at work” to match up with the title.
“Are You Sure You Want a Nikon” by Doctor Orloff
I like this portrait, it seems to me that there is a lot said and written about getting rid of distracting backgrounds when shooting people. For me this kind of contextual portrait is far more interesting. The selective colourisation works well. I like the expression on the face of this guy. An enigmatic character, he has a rather menacing smile, I think he shoots Pentax but ay have a sideline shooting people! I wonder if his eyes could be made red as well to give him even more menace. Extra points for including Pentax.
“Emergency Chocolate” by AxelLuther
Do you work in the marketing dept. for Nutella? Visually this is completely credible as a genuine advert. I like the fact you have matched the font and colour of the text to that on the jar. It really does look very professional. The message you are conveying is really good too because it is universal. For me the most effective ads are instantly understandable and recognisable. You really have nailed it. It does make me wonder about the millions of dollars spent on advertising . In the real world I think it would have taken six ad execs and a dozen or so “meetings” to get this image done. Perhaps you should start your own agency!
“Find all you want in the Big Apple” by aliengrove
Apple have an incredible brand. Everyone wants their products- iPhone, iMac, iPod.
This image dovetails with the brand values – it is slick, clean and polished. I like the composition and the double play on words. The angle of view suggests that we are almost worshipping at the Apple altar. I think it is a very appropriate subject for a mono conversion- I wonder whether the apple itself could be popped to be pure white which would match the illuminated apple on the lid of the Macbook. A strong contender.
“That Timotei Moment (for dogs)” by marklj
I certainly do remember the advert. Blonde girl, lots of hair swooshing, soft focus in a meadow. This image conveys the personality of the dog well- my sister-in –law has a Boxer they are absolutely crackers! This one looks like it is having an absolute hoot! I like the way the water droplets have created a halo around the dog and I think they have been captured very nicely, the vignette accentuates this. Conversely they have limited our view of the dog’s face which I would like to see more of. On the same note I think it is a little underexposed and some of the detail of the dogs face is lost in the shadows. This is a really fun image and it’s not hard to see why someone would want to give this handsome fella a home.
“Time for a Break” by Mudge.
This is a very simple composition but I absolutely love the colour. The red really packs a mighty punch. I was further impressed when I saw it was taken with an Optio, the colour alone here makes me want to buy one! I think you have been very clever with the text- there is a natural space for it at the bottom of the image. I really like the figures at the window although the woman in the doorway looks a little static. I would now like a Baguette Rouge et Pomme Frites!
“Try to move forward in life not sideways” by Geordie01
Lots of good wordplay here all centered around the humble sideways scuttling crab. I do like the pun. The image itself is more difficult to comment on as in many ways it is a picture of a picture. What I do like is the story behind the sign. We have a small independent trader selling a product that is all about freshness and quality- He has no budget for his marketing (hence the ramshackle sign) but I bet his seafood is fantastic.
“Run Down” by Vonbatcat
A simple image that I like a lot. The colours are wonderful- very vivid. I am fascinated by this kind of urban decay. You can see how this would have looked brand new and can therefore appreciate the gradual process of decay. This place has seen better days but is clearly far more interesting to look at because of it. I like the double meaning of the title. Not sure I will be visiting though I think they may have some stock issues!
“Banana Banana” by NFLeandro
To be truthful I am rather perplexed by this one. I am not quite sure what the image is trying to say. Is the figure longing to return home I wonder? What is being sold here? Its gone over my head a little bit. The image itself is a bit soft and there is some noise as well. I wonder if it is heavily cropped image. It is good to see another none SLR entry though. Sorry I didn’t get it!
“Christmas Light” by Thoughton
Super Massive Bokeh!!! I like this a lot. It is very simple composition because of the few elements and for me is very successful because of this. It is a product I like (a reformed smoker) and is iconic. Great colours – can’t have been easy to get the exposure correct with so many highlights in the image. I would say you did a great job here. I also really like the wording. Like most people these days I am extremely bored of political correctness overkill. This advert would not be allowed in any form these days- for this reason I like it even more!
“Wonder Carrots” by GlynM
I’ve not been introduced to this little guy before but it seems he (and now his sister) have made appearances before. In a sense then they already have a “brand” which seems appropriate. I think taking a very well known ad as a template is very effective. Despite the images being completely different from the original bra ad it is instantly recognisable and not just because of the words, you have re-created this very faithfully which really adds to the sense of fun. The work you have put into it is impressive- thanks for taking so much time- the results are very impressive and professional. I’m sure you had fun doing it.
“For Stress Free Shopping….” By David Trout
We couldn’t have a comp like this without a mention of the ubiquitous Tesco! The screaming face is appropriate because for me it illustrates how I feel about shopping- I hate it! I can’t quite work out how the image came about, is the face on a wall in the shop? Or is it smaller than it looks and we are very close to it.? I’m not sure whether I have got the message. I think this is because I am not a fan of Tesco (they are laying waste to the country in my view but that’s another story!) are you having a dig at them? If so I definitely approve.
“Heres Jack” by Puma
Like the earlier Zippo image this one would never get past the censors- alcohol and smoke in the same shot! You score extra points for this! Jack Daniels have a very strong iconic brand. The black and white label is instantly recognisable- Ideal for a mono shot- very effective. Difficult to get the exposure right because of mainly dark areas but a few very bright areas on the bottle itself- I think this has been expertly achieved particularly the area on the label. The reflection adds to the image as well. Like the Nutella ad this one could go straight on the pages of a magazine (If they allowed it) and not look out of place. Not sure that the debris bottom right adds to the image (is it ash?) but that is a minor point.
“JA’s Flower Shop” by JudithAnn
A complete riot of colour here! I think you would really like to open this place. Lots of work gone into this and it is really effective. I have seem some pretty rotten ads for florists before. This one does a much better job than some of the real ones! A good macro shot- DOF quite challenging I would think as you’re not very close to the subject and shooting wide open. The flowers are pin sharp in the centre and gradually blur toward the edges, I do find the blurred one on the left draws me in a bit too much. Really like the border but I am not so sure about the hearts the one top left is a bit distracting. The font used seems absolutely right for a florist (no idea why, it just does). I would be happy to order some flowers from this place (as would my wife).
“No Bargains Today” by GaryJohn
I do like the composition. Good strong lines, punchy colour and movement. A well rendered image with lots of interesting elements. I like photos that make the mundane come to life and you have done this here IMO. Despite the colour it still looks rather depressing and this ties in with the title. The overall image is quite simple which appeals. The litter and the bottle could easily distract but I actually think they add to the atmosphere. The figure is effective because the man is hurrying through- he doesn’t want to hang around- and who would. Very good
“BoysToys- Gone Outdoors” by Axelfilipov
I was not aware of this brand. I had a look at their website and they sell lots of clever things. Your wording matches the marketing of the brand. The image itself is well shot, good oof background and nice bokeh- you can still see there is a tent which continues the oudoor theme. My main issue though is the main item in the image isn’t very interesting- I would have preferred to see the contents of the bag instead!
“Buy Today-Don’t go Away” by Hyram
Lots of good colour here. It is a very unusual composition and mixes the two dimensional with the three dimensional and the division between the two is very stark. It makes it quite difficult to resolve as an image I think. As you point out it is very difficult to get good shots in this kind of environment.
Good framing of the figure- and well exposed. Can’t help thinking I want to see more of the right hand side than the left though.
Onto the results then. It has been tricky to pick a favourite but

Many thanks John for a terrific competition subject, your detailed comments and great judging .
Thanks also for awarding Hipperty's wonder carrots the coveted second place. .
I was working in Chiswick in the early nineties when a billboard with the original Wonderbra ad appeared just where the M4 becomes the A4. There was a lot of debate about how many accidents it caused. Hopefully Hipperty's campaign will not suffer from this . It was certainly great fun to rework this iconic ad.
Congratulations to thoughton for a beautiful winning image. Congratulations also to AxelLuther, with whom I share the podium, those highly commended and everyone else for another fantastic set of images.

Hi Jaspers - thanks for this special topic and the very constructive feedback - Grrrr - this time I would have loved to win because then I could have used this in my CV when contacting Ferero to apply for an art director position .
So congratulation to Thoughton and Glyn for two very special photographs and the others in the recommendation.
And no - unfortunately I do not work in a marketing department - I somehow like the idea Actually, I simply made this pic for the competition because I had nothing appropriate in my collection.
