Description
Show me your best image that demonstrates suffering in the human form. In this image I will not be looking for technical perfection as far as sharpness and exposure is concerned, but the power of this image to tell it's story. Looking forward to see what we can come up with here

I closely looked at all these images during the week and found them all to be particularly interesting in the mood of the subject. I would have to say that it was hard to pick between 3-4 images in this competition, especially the ones of the the little girls crying and the one where the little girl is staring at the piece of chocolate. I chose Jonga Denis - Yaoundé as the winner obviously for its sad and powerful capture of human deformities. Just watching him sit there contemplating on his future while eating a sandwhich (which probably for him is a treat). I would really love to, however, see this image in black and white with increasing contrasts. i am sure that it would make this image far more powerful. Well done to promhandicam for this excellent shot and to everyone else who have demonstrated their photographic skill in telling the story of suffering.

If you feel like expanding on that to make a few comments about each image that would be very helpful to those concerned.

Congratulations to promhandicam!

Congratulations to promhandicam - a fairly disturbing image.

Did the young man receive treatment and how did he get on :

Thank you Mattox for choosing this photo. I have only just realised that the competition comments are at the bottom of the page below all the entries - I had thought that this was just a gallery and not a forum thread.

With regards to the photo, of the hundreds of people with disabilities I've had the privilege of meeting and working with, this was one of the more unusual cases and his suffering was both physical and psychological. Sadly although he could have benefited from orthopaedic surgery he was only really interested in receiving a handout and he left the centre before he could receive proper counselling. As hard as it is for us to imagine, having such a pronounced disability is a means for many to earn a living, albeit a meagre one. I have even come across cases where a child is deliberately harmed or injured so as to enable the family to use that child to get sympathy and (more importantly) money.

The thing is to post nothing here until the competition closes, then after the judging it's Open House for everyone's comments. Anything posted before that gets deleted.
