Weekly #918 - Making a Noise Competition
Title | Weekly #918 - Making a Noise |
---|---|
Judge | Lubbyman | Closing Date | 11/05/2025 |
Description | |
Photos are, of course, silent but they can evoke sounds. So this week, I want to see photos of things making a noise. It can be any sort of noise - a bird singing, the roar of a jet engine, people talking, instruments being played, sports fans cheering, dogs barking, the whine of a racing car, a choir singing, a steam locomotive chuffing... the possibilities are endless. The usual rules apply - the photo can have been taken at any time but must have been taken with a Pentax or acceptable clone. Submissions close on Sunday 11th May at midnight BST. |

Here, as promised, are comments and the other podium places. An interesting set of entries, not as many as I was expecting but still a strong field and well done to all for meeting the brief so well.
Sue Riley ‘Noisy Sea’ – The sound of waves breaking against rocks. I can hear it, even smell the sea. The compositions works well for me, too. I wonder what it would look like with a really rough sea and a strong onshore wind?
John Riley ‘Singing for Victory’ – Ooh, I can hear that close harmony, and I like it. Pity about the trellis and the cables trailing behind them, rather a distraction to my eyes. But otherwise, who can resist a lady in uniform?
SSF1957 ‘Ecclesbourne Express’ – It’s been a while since I’ve been close to a working locomotive (Llangollen in 2019 to be precise), but this brought back the sound, the smell, the emotions. And everything in the image comes together to make it a great photo, too. The framing by foliage, the glimpse trackside structures giving context but not enough to be distracting, the curve of the track revealing a both the path the train has followed and a hint of what the loco is pulling… And that’s why it’s this week’s winner.
Simonmac ‘Entertaining the Shoppers’ – At first glance I thought ‘Bill Bailey’! But no, it’s a street entertainer, and no problem in hearing his guitar. B&W works for me, too. I’d like to have seen a bit more space in from of the entertainer, though, my eye keeps being drawn to what behind him. However, the pose, the expression on the face, all spot on and much as I remember my father when he played guitar in a local band.
Noelcmn ‘Snap, Crackle and Pop’ – Yes! The sound of a blazing fire! And I do like a really good blaze (always making sure that my bonfire doesn’t get out of control, of course). The colours and composition work very well for me. A striking and unusual photo.
RayW ‘Hisssssss!’ – Hisssssss indeed, yes I can hear it and it certainly is loud. The steam and smoke leaves no doubt that something big and impressive is happening even if I don’t know what a steam cock is. I’d like to have the locomotive angled slightly towards the camera rather than away, but presumably it was a matter of taking the shot from whatever spot was accessible and hope.
You know already who is on top of the podium, so here are the other two places:
Runner up: ‘Snap, Crackle and Pop’ by Noelcmn
Third place: ‘Noisy Sea’ by Sue Riley (and please go back there when it is really rough and let us see what it looks like)

Congrats SSF1957, I can certainly identify with that noise. I live across the road from a metro train line. Congrats too Sue, sounds which I hope I will here soon when I go on holiday to my coastal home town. Thanks for my 2nd spot, and for the Judging and C&C Steve. Much appreciated.
